The word “apologetics” comes from the Greek word that means to give a well thought through defense. In other words, it means to contend or take a stand for something. It means much more than engaging in an intellectual argument or debate. It can best be summed up in 1 Peter 3:15-16:

“but set apart the Messiah as Lord in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you. However, do this with gentleness and respect, keeping your conscience clear, so that when you are accused, those who denounce your Christian life will be put to shame.” (HCSB)

This involves three important aspects:

StudyFirst, letting Christ reign in every aspect of our lives so that people can see the difference in our lives and then want to ask us questions about it – to live a life that generates questions.

Second, we need to be prepared to answer those questions when they come. That includes not only what we believe but why we believe it and being able to contrast the Christian faith with other faiths that compete for the hearts and minds of people.

Third, we must always build genuine relationships with non-believers that are based on love and respect and to always address their questions from that perspective and not from one of self-righteousness or piety.

This is what it means to be an apologetic disciple – one who lives a life in such a way that the truth of the Christian faith is clearly demonstrated in every aspect of it. Therefore, the purpose of apologetics and the goal of an apologetic disciple is to tear down those barriers of false religious doctrines and cultural beliefs and practices that block communication of the Gospel message.

Apologetics is the barrier breaker that opens the path to the Gospel
